Grotelueschen's designs combine psychology with ecology to create landscapes that are pleasing and useful for people and good for the environment. She can do full plans, partial plans for single areas, revisions of existing plans to use native plants, or consultation. Grotelueschen also offers teaching of maintenance methods, and writing, lecturing, and slide shows about creating outdoor rooms or any topic on native landscaping. A typical PlannedScapes project contains many of the features that are found in the landscaping at NorthStar Credit Union, on Winfield Road just north of Warrenville Road, in Warrenville. There is minimal lawn on this property. There is a lawn adjacent to the building and another small portion behind the building for a tent for employee events. All other surrounding ground is planted to prairie plants, with a strong grass component. Tall grasses such as Indian grass and mid-height grasses such as switchgrass and little bluestem were planted in single species drifts to create masses of the color and texture provided by these prairie grasses. Smaller drifts of forbs, the flowering plants, were interspersed. The front retention basin is filled with shorter prairie plants rather than turf grass, including some wild iris that bloom in the spring in the wettest part. Near the building, native woodland and savanna shrubs along with some non-native tough perennials combine to create a more conventional look, while at the end of the building near the employee entrance, taller plantings are used to give enclosure and privacy to an employee gathering area.
Pricing and Ordering information: A typical 1/4 to 1/2 acre full residential plan starts at $600, and a 1/2 acre to 1 acre plan at $900, and over an acre at $1200. Large projects, commercial projects, and consultation, writing, and teaching are based on $50 per hour fee structure.
