Statement: In Schmierer’s Main Street series, the buildings and the linear geometry of the town are captured in perspectives that draw the eye into the photograph to search out more. Details give evidence to the people of the place and what is important to them. Other scenes from around town reflect the influences and burdens of living in a town whose living depends on agriculture and transportation. Scenes are void of people, yet are all about the works and lives of the people who build and maintain and even restore them. Rural scenes often show the effects of time on abandoned farmsteads, where only hints of the former residents remain. Rural nature is a nature confined by the pressure of agriculture and restrained by the hardness of climate. The absolute flatness of this region is portrayed where the straight horizon is revealed in the photograph.
Schmierer, after living in Texas and Kansas, now lives in the town where he spent his childhood, Ellendale, North Dakota, just a few miles west of Prairie Oak Artisans gallery owner’s first home.
