Karma Grotelueschen

Grotelueschen's photo slide shows for the classes she teaches at the Morton Arboretum, College of DuPage Horticulture Department, and various garden club speaking opportunities lead to requests for framed and matted nature photographs, which she now offers in her galleries.  Grotelueschen translates photographed nature scenes into felted landscapes that use traditional and contemporary felting methods.

Statement: Grotelueschen is a prairie fanatic.  Her photography primarily deals with the beauty of prairie plants and how the light interacts with the plants in various seasons.  Her landscape design practice has come to specialize in prairie and woodland projects, and she is actively involved in The Wild Ones, an organization that promotes natural landscaping.  It is important to her that art and artists promote environmentalism and responsible stewardship of the earth so that it will be here in all its glory for her children and their children and theirs beyond.

Media: Grotelueschen is a nature photographer, landscape designer, and lecturer and teacher.  She further interprets nature images into felted landscapes, which use traditional hot and cold water felting for the background and contemporary needle felting for the foreground details.  She also uses felting to create felted vases that have glass cylinder liners to allow use with fresh flowers, twigs, or pods. Grotelueschen makes prints directly from leaves and carves and prints images using block printing methods.  Grotelueschen also creates beaded jewelry from semi-precious stones and sterling silver components, creates hanging garden poetry for use in outdoor living spaces, and creates pins from various media, such as polymer clay, feathers, and leather.

Landscape Design: Grotelueschen's landscape design firm is PlannedScapes Native Landscape Design, which specializes in creating outdoor rooms and in use of native plants of the woodland and prairie.  PlannedScapes is proud of the design of the landscaping at NorthStar Credit Union on Winfield Road just north of Warrenville Road, in Warrenville.  This landscape uses prairie sweeping through large perimeter areas and native trees and shrubs in more conventional arrangements near the building and sidewalks.  A partially enclosed employee gathering area is featured at the end of the building.
