Frank Carter

Carter works in rustic wood, crafting functional items that bring art to life and express his love of the 'great outdoors'.  Carter hails from Arizona originally, a fact evident in the soft desert colors of the travertine tiles he uses in his garden table tops.

Statement: Frank Carter began making hiking sticks for fellow Boy Scout dads on camping outings.  Each one was different in the type of wood found in the nearby woods, the carving of the handhold, the details on the shaft.  Finished in gloss or a matt oil, each stick takes on a truly unique beauty that is made quite literally from garbage, a stick that would have soon decomposed in the woods.  In order to produce quantity for the gallery, Carter now acquires wood with permission from park district trimmings.  Bits of tile and beads can sometimes be found imbedded into the wood, with leather thong wrist straps completing the hiking stick.  These are functional walking sticks, but are also beautiful hung horizontally over a mantel or leaning in the corner of a front foyer, reminding us to 'take a hike'. Rustic vases have glass inserts so that the can hold fresh flowers, seed pods, or twigs.  Carter's travertine tile creations reflect the color hues of the desert southwest where he first hiked nature.

Media: Carter works in rustic wood and travertine tile.  He cuts the tiles individually to fit the concentric rings, then tumbles them to soften the cut edges, then assembles them into table tops for the garden or the home. The table tops rest on hand wrought iron bases by blacksmith Chris Hubbard.
