Chuck Armstrong

A lifelong woodworker, Chuck Armstrong crafts beautiful things from beautiful woods.  From tiny delicate realistically shaped leaf and flower pins to large freeform bowls to the nearly life size inlays of prairie dock and compass plant on his home's hardwood floors, Armstrong's woodworking brings out the color and grain to their fullest beauty.

Statement: Chuck Armstrong finds beauty in the perfect grain and rich color of natural wood, but also in the 'imperfections' caused by cracking and the 'discolorations' caused by fungi and the 'damage' done by insects as they tunnel in the wood.  His thinly carved pins use the direction of the grain to enhance the shape of the leaf or flower and his freeform bowls allow the unique traits and individuality of the piece of wood to guide the shape and lines of the bowl.

Media: Wood, with recent emphasis on native woods and woods colored by fungus or other natural so-called imperfections.
